Set to be the nation’s brand-new crime obsession, the six-part series sees Harry Potter’s Matthew Lewis (Me Before You, All Creatures Great & Small) take the lead as the empathetic canon-turned-sleuth, Daniel Clement, who becomes embroiled in the shocking murder of one of his parishioners.
With its blend of captivating crime, familiar faces and picturesque rural settings, Murder Before Evensong makes the perfect winter warmer, as the evenings draw in. Hot on the heels of its premiere on 5, the highly anticipated mystery series arrives on DVD and digital on 17 November 2025, courtesy of Acorn Media International.

Joining Lewis is a stellar lineup of British talent including Amanda Redman (New Tricks, Sexy Beast), Amit Shah (Happy Valley, Crashing), Tamzin Outhwaite (Eastenders, New Tricks) and Adam James (The Day of the Jackal, Doctor Foster) as they bring the novel to life.
In 1988, in the quiet, charming village of Champton, Canon Daniel Clement (Lewis) shares a rectory with his overbearing widowed mother Audrey (Redman) and his two lovable dachshunds, Cosmo and Hilda. When Daniel announces his plan to modernise the church, the town is unnerved and his congregation left divided. The community are further shaken to their core when a dead body is discovered in the church, and everyone’s a suspect.

With a killer on the loose and bodies beginning to pile up, the church becomes a breeding ground for gossip, fear and suspicion and it’s Daniel who must hold his fractured community together. As DS Neil Vanloo (Shah) observes his close bond to his parishioners, he enlists Daniel to assist in the search for the cold-blooded killer.
But as he delves under the veneer of village life to piece together clues and uncover long buried secrets, Daniel is forced to question who he can trust and whether he himself was the intended murder victim all along.

Uncover a new whodunit for the ages as The Reverend Richard Coles’ story of secrets, scandals and sudden deaths is brought to life in Murder Before Evensong. With its mix of warmth, humour, suspense, and 1980s charm, this canny and atmospheric new crime caper will have you praying for more.
