SELF DRIVER – Spoiler Free Review
Self Driver got its European premiere at Grimmfest on 5th October 2024.
Shot on a shoestring in the finest guerrilla style this is a mind bending look at how far you’d go to make money; and conform.
Facing ever increasing debt, his landlord hounding him and struggling with the overall struggles of modern living, down on his luck D played by Nathanael Chadwick is offered the chance to earn the most money he’s ever had simply by downloading a new taxi app, and doing as he’s told.
On his first night on the job he meets some of the strangest customers he’s ever seen, getting increasingly odd, dark and dangerous as the night progresses. Each journey further tests his morals and pushes the envelope of how far he’s prepared to go to follow orders.
The film is superbly shot, with some delightfully cinematic scenes considering the lower than low budget and guerrilla shooting required. The script is tight and natural, The Cuckoo being a highlight for me. The concept of an app telling you what to do and you following its every order sounds crazy, until you think of how many people drive into rivers following their GPS every year.
A great film that builds in oddness, and disturbing behaviour until the morning comes.
So buckle up, get in the passenger seat of Self Driver and prepare for a wild, thoroughly enjoyable ride!
