Creepy Pasta – Review
Anthology horror, Creepy Pasta comes exclusively to the streaming service SCREAMBOX on 23rd May 2023.
Creepy Pasta is a term coined on 4chan and is basically any horror related legend shared on the internet. The most famous of these was probably Slender Man.
As usual I’ll try not to put any major spoilers in this
The film sees a man trapped in an old spooky house, with dead bodies randomly sprinkled about for good measure, although he doesn’t seem too worried about this and carries on regardless, nonchalantly pushing one of the bodies off the chair so he can get to the computer. He gets told what to do via texts and messenger posts. It’s clear he’s looking for footage, and it’s on one of the flash drives so he must check them all. It’s not the most finessed connecting story for “we’re going to watch a load of short films” but hey, it’ll do.
He puts the first video on, the Creepy Pasta writer voiceover tells us what the theme of the clips is.
The first one is in Spanish (I think) with no subtitles (as far as I could tell) so I had no clue what was going on script wise. A girl’s in a house talking to someone on the phone, stormy night, power cut, glow comes rom wardrobe. The glow looks like a student has stolen a traffic cone with a flashing light on and hidden it in her wardrobe. There appears to be a monster under the bed. Standard.
We then go back to the unnamed fella at the computer, now looking like he’s dying, the viral videos he’s playing are obviously so evil they’re affecting his health.
He plays the next one
2 sisters fighting in the bedroom, the younger sister has an imaginary friend “Jumby”, who may not be as imaginary as she thinks. This tale has a pretty decent jump scare.
Back to dude, now looking like he’s half dead, next clip.
Old lady with an oxygen tank in a big old house, spooky victorian boy with balloons type spookiness. This one’s pretty effective at building the scare, it’s shot so it’s almost black and white. The end is particularly haunting.
Back to the now 3/4 dead fella in the house, and the bodies that were there seem to be getting back up, zombie style. Bizarrely nothing’s followed up about this angle. I might have imagined it?
The next vid sees 4 girl having a girly night in, they are talking about gross facts, then one of them mentions “shadow person theory” shadow people you only see in your peripheral vision. Then when her friends have left, guess what…
Back to the dude, now practically melting out of his own face, plays the next vid.
Vid 5 – Properly weird one this, a man who breaks all the rules, literally. Absolute weirdness, emergency alert broadcast “Do Not Watch” he watches, Fella on screen being controlled by a puppeteer, like the kid in Dream Warriors. “Do not Scream!!” Well…
That was a half decent segment with a pretty good ending.
Back to Mr no name, is he dead yet? No, just nearly. Blood’s coming from everywhere now. His mum probably always told him the internet would rot his brain.
Vid 6 – a nice house, a (apologies to the actor if it’s not meant) bit of a crackhead looking guy comes and gets a text from Tiffany “come inside and find me”. He goes in, but sees her in the garden, follows. Gets caught up in a cult thing, ends up in hell? basically they’ve used him to bring a spirit back. Have they succeeded?
Back to our dying mate in the house, next vid
Vid 7 – A girl writing a story about the Grey Man, but has her fiction become reality?
Back to our deffo fully dead soon fella in the house and next vid.
Vid 8 – another non English language one with no subs. There isn’t much talking to this one and it is 100% the scariest one in the film. We get the answer to the question what happens if you see monsters in your closet, when your bedroom is basically a closet. Actually spooky, good under the bed moments and an ending that genuinely made me jump.
Vid 9 – A Candyman style tale that tell us if you ever receive a message with an attachment titled “The Wraith” don’t open the damn thing!
Back to the dude in the house. Yeah he’s knackered.
Vid 10, in what looks like the Myers house, a babysitter goes in and nobody seems to be home. Lets just say this is a weak effort that could have been great. Boarded up door, cute slightly odd kid, missing person, missing mum, chewed up dog food bowl but no dog, EL KOOKO?! Too much hinted at that’s never utilised and it’s daytime then seems night, then not and I couldn’t quite work out what time it was supposed to be. In the end I didn’t really care either.
Back to the dude and we finally get to see why he’s at the house and what he was looking for…
Overall this film is quite good, hit and miss segments but all somewhat spooky. The connecting sections of the guy in the house are a bit meh and nonsensical (why did that body stand up, did I miss something? Who were the other dead people? )
As it’s on Screambox it’s well worth a watch and you may even find yourself wanting to watch one or two of the clips more than once.
