Recipes for Love and Murder is a charming, quirky murder mystery series based on Sally Andrew’s Tannie Maria books. Set in a small South African town, the story follows Tannie Maria (Maria Doyle Kennedy), a middle-aged advice columnist who blends her love for food with solving local murders. After one of her advice column readers is killed, she finds herself drawn into the investigation, using her culinary expertise and compassionate nature to uncover clues. The show mixes cosy vibes, food, humour, and a touch of darkness as Maria, with the help of her colleague Jessie, gets tangled in danger while searching for the truth.

This is a light-hearted murder mystery series with heartwarming moments, set against the vibrant backdrop of a small South African town. It feels a lot like Heartbeat with slightly more sunshine. The show offers a unique recipe, pardon the pun, of humour, charm and suspense.

At the heart of the series is Tannie Maria, a middle-aged recipe columnist who unexpectedly becomes an advice columnist, blending her love for food with solving local murders.

Murder, she ate!

Kennedy brings warmth and depth to the character, making Maria instantly likeable.

The show’s pacing is relaxed, allowing time for both the mystery to unfold and the characters to develop. Jessie (Kylie Fisher), Maria’s young, brash colleague, adds a fun dynamic as the two women make an unlikely investigative duo. Their relationship is a highlight, Jessie’s energetic, impulsive nature contrasts with Maria’s calm, steady approach eventually evolving into a supportive partnership. The show’s light comedic touches, along with its picturesque setting and colourful cast of townsfolk, give it a small-town vibe that’s comforting even when there’s murders afoot.

The mysteries themselves are engaging, with enough red herrings and twists to keep you guessing, but you may have worked it all out pretty quick.

Recipes for Love and Murder is a delightful, feel-good mystery series with heart, humour, and food on screen you can almost taste!

It’s perfect for fans of cosy mysteries, food lovers and whether you’re here for the mouth-watering recipes or the clever whodunits, there’s something for everyone.

Ostrich pie anyone?
