KILLHER – Review
KillHer is a bit like sitting down to a campfire story where the storyteller can’t quite decide if they want to scare you senseless or just make you laugh.

The plot’s a familiar one—young friends head into the woods for a bit of pre-wedding fun, but instead get terrorised by a deranged killer. Sounds like classic slasher territory, right?
Director Robyn August definitely brought some retro B-movie slasher style to this. Mixing the slasher movie thrills we’ve come to expect, with campy teen comedy dialogue as we follow Mattie, Eddie and friends on a hen do turned camping trip.

The performances in KILLHER are all pretty spot on, helped by great onscreen chemistry of the main cast and a natural sounding script with some genuinely funny beats. M.C. Huff plays Eddie with much gusto. A practical joker and bit of a pain in the ass. Funny though. The other girls characters are all quite reserved but come out of their shells as the film progresses. Rae in particular cultivates an unhealthy dislike for Raccoons. One of the highlights is when we meet HXB, superbly brought to flamboyant life by Harrison White.

The film benefits from a super retro soundtrack and flashy, clever cinematography which gives the film an energetic feel. The practical effects used during the kills are superb and add that much needed element of old-school slasher charm. What it lacks in suspense, it makes up for in fun, over the top blood splatter.

The characters are mostly likeable, mostly, and they all follow the tried and tested absolute fucking idiot vibe. The intentions of the killer are apparent from the get go, telegraphed throughout and completely ignored. Perfect slasher movie fodder.
I really enjoyed KillHer. It’s far from perfect but it’s perfect fun. It stays engaging, doesn’t take itself too seriously, and the third act goes turbo batshit crazy in the most delightful of ways. Definitely worth adding to your spooky season watchlist.
