The Super Mario Bros. Movie Review
The Super Mario movie arrived down the big green cinema pipe today, so naturally I had my ticket ready to “Let’s a go”. I completely forgot it is Easter half term, so that means small humans in the cinema, but not even that could stop me.
Incase you’ve just come from a land with no knowledge of any pop culture from the last century, the film is based on characters from Nintendo (a video game company, originally created to make playing cards but… hey, I thought it was a good gag but this thing’s going to take forever to write if I carry it on so it ends here).
The film tells the story of two Brooklyn based plumbers Mario(Chris Pratt) and Luigi(Charlie Day), the titular Mario brothers. A bit like the Ant and Dec of the plumbing world only instead of standing on the left or right one wears green and has an L on his hat and the other is Mario.
Mario Mario, think about that for a minute.
The evil Bowser, king of the Koopas has invaded the Mushroom Kingdom a land of mushrooms, with people who are mushrooms. Listen, I never said it would make any sense did I? Must be a great place to live though as it’s full of Fungi’s. Sorry, I’ll stop now. I think.
Anyway, so Mario and Luigi have just opened Super Mario Bros plumbing, much to the distain of family and friends who think they’re losers. They hear of a big flood in Brooklyn and Mario knows he’s the man to save the day so off he goes to plumb that leak.
While trying to close off the leak the Bros are thrown into an unused part of the sewers where they find a big green pipe. Now if you know the games you don’t need a Leonardo Dicaprio meme to tell you what’s coming next.
Mario and Luigi find themselves split up, Luigi in Luigi’s Mansion style area and Mario in the Mushroom Kingdom. Mario seeks the help of Princess Peach to find Luigi, and Peach wants Mario to help defeat Bowser.
Meanwhile, Bowser is just a misunderstood romantic and just wants to get Peach to agree to marry him by threatening to murder everyone in a big pool of lava.
Can Mario find Luigi, defeat Bowser and save the day, and in doing so save his beloved Brooklyn?
Go see the movie to find out.
With great voice acting throughout from Pratt, Day, Jack Black, Seth Rogan and Anya Taylor-Joy and with all of your favourite Mario characters and some other classic Nintendo easter eggs thrown in, this is a great fun film for the whole family.
It’s colourful, a nice length at just over an hour and a half and just good harmless fun. The script and plot won’t be winning any awards, but it’s just a fun film with a lot of action, laughs and a good few bangers on the soundtrack.
Go see it, you’ll love it.
