Unwelcome. Spend Some Time With The Little People

UNWELCOME stars Hannah John-Kamen and Douglas Booth as Maya and Jamie, a couple who escape their urban nightmare to the tranquility of rural Ireland only to discover malevolent, murderous goblins lurking in the gnarled, ancient wood at the foot of their new garden.

Boasting a great cast including Colm Meaney, Jamie-Lee O’Donnell, Chris Walley and Kristian Nairn and directed by Jon Wright(Grabbers, Brassic), the film is based on an original screenplay by Mark Stay (Robot Overlords).

The film is a great dip into the kind of Irish folklore horror that we just don’t get enough of.

Terrorised in England, Maya and Jamie are left a house in Ireland when Jamie’s auntie dies so off they go.

The locals are very “local” and the couple are immediately informed that she used to leave an offering every day before sunset for the Redcaps, the little people, basically goblins in the woods.

The hole in the roof needs mending and the local rough arse builder family is called into action.

I went into this film knowing nothing about it, not even having watched a trailer so I’ll leave any more plot lines for you to discover yourself.

I highly recommend this film, a comedy horror that leans into the comedy well and the monsters are not overly used, but when they are on screen they look great. There’s a couple of good jump scares and the urban horror tension in parts is done really well.

It’s far from perfect, the character Jamie will get on a lot of people’s nerves as he can’t decide what he wants to be in this, and some of his outbursts left me thinking there’s scenes cut out that fleshed out reasoning behind his attitude but overall it’s a great, fun watch and when the little people get involved it really picks up pace.

UNWELCOME is released in cinemas January 27th 2023.
