Christmas set drama that like all the best family gatherings of the season has your nerves on edge from the beginning
A Christmas set drama that like all the best family gatherings of the season has your nerves on edge from the beginning.
This rightfully acclaimed British drama stars Stephen Graham as Andy, the head chef in one of the hottest tickets in town, on the busiest night of the year. Clearly a troubled man, Andy is struggling to hold everything together, balancing a rocky personal and professionaly life and the cracks are showing.
The rest of the team in the kitchen are all creaking under the pressure of working in this busy environment and having to cover his obvious recent failings along with coping with the inept management team.
The film is shot in one shot and is just balletic in it’s flow. You genuinely would believe this was a fly on the wall of a real restaurant and the performances every single actor puts in are phenomenal.
A scene with the pastry chef and her assistant is a noteable gut punch in what is an already tense film.
The film begins with the restaurant getting put down from a 5 star to a 3, due to the mistakes that Andy has been making and the night doesn’t get any better for him. Mix in influencers, an impending engagement, a customer with racist undertones and the mention of a nut allergy along with the one shot making you feel like the afformentioned fly and the 90 minutes ticks on by so beautifully but with that knot in your stomach you want in a great drama.
It’s almost a horror film in that respect.
It’s definitely a film you’ll want to rewatch, even if just to revel in the absolute skills of the shooting
This must have Limited Edition Box set release from Second Sight takes a deep dive into the ingredients it took to make a masterwork, from those behind the scenes and in front of the camera. Presented in a rigid slipcase with new artwork by Andrew Bannister, the special features include audio commentaries and interviews including producers Hester Ruoff, Bart Ruspoli, writer James Cummings and stars Ray Panthaki and Jason Flemyng. There’s also a Making of and the release comes with a 70-page softcover book with new essays and collectors cards.
The picture quality and sound on this disc are superb, clear and crisp picture so good you can almost taste the food.
The Special features are really good and give you at least two more reasons to watch the film again with a couple of insightful commentary tracks. One featuring the producers and one with a couple of the cast.
The interview bits are a real insight into the process of getting something like this to the screen and are really interesting, if you can get past the fact that they look like they’ve been shot in an abandoned office that’s in need of a paint job and new blinds.
There is a 40 minute making of too which will give you more on the mind blowing feat of getting this film to the screen.
This Limited edition boxset comes highly recommended
