Sean Baker’s Tangerine is released today on Limited Edition Blu-ray courtesy of Second Sight Films.

Described as a ‘Hymn to the spirit of the streets’ (Empire) the multi-award-winning feature shot on an iPhone and starring previously unknown, Kitana Kiki Rodriguez and Mya Taylor, this brilliantly shot, warm and funny piece of filmaking is a great alternative Christmas movie.

A rough-and-ready feel, an anarchic sort of New Wave looseness… a one-crazy-night picture… a real energy

The Guardian

Set on the streets of LA on Christmas Eve we meet Sin-DeeRella(Rodriguez,) a transgender sex worker, fresh out of prison to find out from her best friend Alexandra (Taylor) that her lover Chester, cheated on her while she was away. The man just happens to be a pimp.

This news makes her set off on a mission to find him and his new girl and kick the living bejeebus out of them both, probably not the best idea if you’ve just got out of prison after a 28 day sentence, unless you enjoyed it so much you’d like a longer stay.

The filmmaking is electric, boasting the vim and verve of a young Scorsese… equally impressive are the great performances, riotous laughs and the sense of compassion and generosity towards the traditionally marginalised. Terrific stuff

The Tangerine Limited Edition Blu-ray Box set is presented in a rigid slipcase with brand new artwork by Caelin White at FEM-Design, complete with a 60-page book with new essays and comes squeezed full of fascinating and entertaining special features, including a making of, director, writer and actor interviews, audio commentaries and much more.

I think a lot of people who buy this Ltd Edition will have already seen the movie, perhaps at a festival and loved it, so are the extras any good?

The answer is yes.

The audio commentary with Cerise Howard and Rohan Spong is an upbeat, light hearted look at the film and discusses some themes that give you another outlook at certain scenes and may make you have a different opinion/appreciation of the film afterwards.

The interviews are all pretty standard but give an insight into the making of the film and it’s good to see the main stars so many years after the film was made. The interview with Josh Sussman about vomit is an eye opener that’s for sure.

Whether you’ve seen the film many times, or you’re coming at it fresh this Second Sight Limited Edition set won’t disappoint.
