You’re Next – Second Sight Blu-ray Review
Adam Wingard’s You’re Next is a masterclass in horror that injected fresh blood into the home-invasion genre. It’s a brilliant fusion of horror and the darkest of dark comedy.
It sets itself up pretty quickly and we have our first kill within the first few minutes with a nice title screen made within the scene. After the opening we move to what is a seemingly idyllic family getting ready for a reunion and then everything spirals into a brutal fight for survival.
The Davison family, gathered to celebrate their parents’ anniversary, is picked off one by one, but the film takes a sharp turn when Erin reveals her surprising combat skills having been brought up in an Australian outback survivalist compound.
This 4K UHD release by Second Sight Films has a new restoration approved by Wingard himself.
Sharni Vinson is phenomenal as Erin, our the unexpected heroine, and the rest of the cast, which includes the absolute horror icon Barbara Crampton, are also fantastic.
Wingard’s direction is sharp, balancing suspense and action, while Simon Barrett’s script smartly subverts genre conventions.
This release is a must-have for horror aficionados, offering both an excellent presentation and an in-depth exploration of one of the decade’s standout genre films.
Special Features
New 4K restoration and HDR Dolby Vision grade approved by Director Adam Wingard
New audio commentary with Director Adam Wingard and Writer Simon Barrett
Great, really interesting and breezy commentary which is made better as they notice errors in the restoration as they watch. The insight into the making of the film from all angles and is interesting from beginning to end.
Audio commentary with Adam Wingard, Simon Barrett, Sharni Vinson and Barbara Crampton
Any commentary that starts with Barbara Crampton questioning her own name and one of them mentioning childhood arousal by Rainbow Bright you know is likely to be a lot of fun. Really good, with a wide perspective of the making of the film and a lot of fun trivia facts. Really fun commentary to listen to.
Children of the 80s: A new interview with Adam Wingard and Simon Barrett
An hour long interview shot in an almost in the actor’s studio style. Well shot, great audio with a lot of great insight into the film and the film making process. Kind of feels like a visual recording of them doing the audio commentary. Really interesting.
The Most of Us: A new interview with Producers Keith Calder and Jess Wu Calder
Another interview shot similarly to the Children of the 80’s this one’s only 24 minutes long though so a bit breezier but just as interesting.
Script as a Blueprint: A new interview with Actor AJ Bowen
27 minute interview with AJ Bowen. I always find cast interviews years after the film was made to be interesting as usually the people don’t look like they really remember that much, this one’s not like that. He knows his stuff.
Down in the Basement: A new interview with Actor Joe Swanberg
They’re getting shorter this one’s just 16 minutes and shot in a VHS cupboard. Just as interesting as the rest.
Be Funny and Die: A new interview with Actor Amy Seimetz
Just 14 minutes, Amy’s is really interesting and fun, it’s probably shorter because SPOILER ALERT, she’s in the film less…
Falling into Place: A new interview with Production Designer Tom Hammock
Just over 15 mins on this one another great interview to add to this great release.
Slashers Don’t Die: Tim Coleman on You’re Next
12 minute “read my own magazine article” type of thing that’s become standard on these special editions. Decent.
Who’s Next? The Making of You’re Next
Good old fashioned 20 minute making of the movie.
Animated Storyboards
About 5 minutes long. Not much else to say about these tbh.
Limited Edition Contents
Rigid slipcase with new artwork by Nick Charge
120-page book with new essays by Martyn Conterio, Andrew Graves, Kurt Halfyard, Alexandra Heller- Nicholas, Shelagh Rowan-Legg and Heather Wixson
